National Center for Health Statistics - Summary of Surveys and Data Systems

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) is the Nation’s principal health statistics agency. Statistical information provided by NCHS includes data from birth and death records, medical records, interview surveys, and through direct physical exams and laboratory testing.

There are two major types of systems used by the NCHS to collect data:
            - systems based on populations, which contain data collected through personal interviews or examination; and
            - systems based on records, which contain data collected from vital medical records.

The NCHS produces a  summary of surveys and data systems which is updated periodically. The information is organized by name, data source/methods, selected applications of data produced, planned sample type, sociodemographic characteristics, planned periodicity, and other factors. The most recent summary is available from June 2010.
