Privacy Update (as of February, 2009)

HIPAA Privacy Rule
A report on the HIPPA privacy rule was recently released by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Titled Beyond the HIPAA Privacy Rule: Enhancing Privacy, Improving Health Through Research , this report assesses experience with the HIPAA Privacy Rule and offers recommendations on ways to assure improved access to information while protecting personal privacy of health information. In particular, the report addresses the distinct differences between the privacy issues for information-based research, which uses medical records or stored biological samples, and interventional clinical research, which involves people who participate in experimental treatment.

For information on experiences with HIPAA for HSR, please see a summary of the results of the AcademyHealth member survey on HIPAA , conducted by AcademyHealth in December 2007. These resources are also available in the links section.Data Release (General)
